Vagus for iPhone and Apple Watch
Vagus follows your breath-retention practice through your heart rate, live on Apple Watch and in detail on iPhone.
Where it comes from
The technique is controlled hyperventilation with breath retention: rounds of deep, fast breaths, then the air let out and held (the breath hold), then a recovery breath. Its root is Tummo, the Tibetan “inner fire” meditation, one of the Six Yogas of Naropa, practised for centuries in the Himalayas and popularised in the West in recent decades.
How to use it
- On the watch, open Vagus, pick a duration and tap Start (Iniciar). The heart changes colour with your heart rate.
- Tap the screen when you hold your breath and again when you let it go. The recovery lasts 15 seconds and the next round starts by itself.
- On iPhone, each session shows your heart rate by phase, the lowest heart rate in each breath hold, how fast it dropped at the start of the hold and the total retention time. When Apple Watch itself recorded a heartbeat series during the session, heart rate variability (HRV) shows up too.
Practise sitting or lying down — never in water, while driving or standing: holding your breath after deep breathing can make you faint. Vagus is not a medical device and does not diagnose or treat anything; if you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, epilepsy or are pregnant, talk to your doctor first.
Questions
The app doesn't show my heart rate. Check in Settings › Privacy & Security › Health › Vagus that reading heart rate is turned on, and that the watch sits snugly on your wrist.
HRV doesn't show up. Apple Watch doesn't hand apps beat-to-beat data during a workout. HRV only appears when the system recorded a heartbeat series during the session.
The app is in Portuguese. Version 1.0 speaks Brazilian Portuguese; English is on the way.
Where is my data? On your device, in the Health app. See the privacy policy.
